Most Common Foot Problems from Wearing Improperly Fitted Shoes

Wearing the wrong size shoe can be downright uncomfortable but even worse, it can cause serious health issues. If you think you wear the proper size shoe, statistics say you probably don’t. According to one 2016 survey, which polled 3000 women, 90% wear shoes that don’t fit properly. There are several reasons why this is the case—when was the last time you actually checked your shoe size? —one of them being vanity. With the stigma that surrounds women who wear larger size shoes, it is no wonder that many women downsize. It is not worth it! Get fitted and buy shoes that actually fit or run the risk of one of many problems including:

Hammer Toes

Yes, hammer toe is not just a slang term, it is a real medical issue. Hammer toe or mallet toe is a condition that makes the toe curl up instead of lying flat. This is often caused by wearing shoes with high heels and narrow toe boxes. It often effects the toe next to the big toe. This condition can be painful and can cause deformities. Hammer toe can be fixed by wearing roomier shoes. Unfortunately, in extreme cases surgery is necessary.

Bunion

A bunion is a buildup of tissue or an enlarged bone around the base of the big toe. As the bunion grows, the big toe turns inward causing swelling and pain. Wearing properly fitted shoes with a larger toe box is one solution to reversing this issue.

Ingrown Toenail

This issue is not normally caused by wearing too tight shoes, but it is exponentially compounded by it. Trim your toenail straight across and avoid corners to prevent ingrown toenails. Soaking the foot can also help alleviate the pain.

Heel Pain

Nearly half of Americans deal with heel pain and a common culprit is shoes that are too small. The heel bone is the largest of 26 bones in the foot and the heel boasts more than 100 tendons, muscles, and ligaments running through it. This type of pain can occur at the front, back or bottom of the heel.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s Foot is largely attributed to running long distances or encountering unclean showers or floors, but it can also come from wearing too tight shoes for a long period of time. This condition is painful and highly annoying. Wear loose fitting shoes and allow your feet to breath in order to cure it.
